Breaking: Local business owner discovers people need to hear things more than once
I recently had a 1-2-1 with my networking partner BeckyJean Thompson, and she made an interesting observation about how marketing messages really sink in. It takes hearing something multiple times before it actually registers and resonates with us.
Then we started talking about how this happens everywhere—you think you know what someone does, but then they'll mention something that completely surprises you. A service you never knew they offered, a problem they solve that you'd never considered.
Here's the thing: Our brains are wired to filter out noise. The first few times someone shares their story, we're distracted, skeptical, or simply not ready to hear it.
But by the 7th time? That's when it shifts from "another pitch" to "oh, they REALLY do this."
Whether you're networking, posting on LinkedIn, or explaining what you do at coffee meetings—don't get frustrated when people don't "get it" immediately.
Keep showing up. Keep sharing your story. In different ways, different contexts, different angles.
Because somewhere between impression 5 and 7, you'll go from background noise to "the person I need to call."
